Gal 6:7-10 ESV Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. (8) For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. (9) And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
We may think that no one knows our sin, but God is not mocked, and we deceive only ourselves if we think differently. Farmers of course recognize that when you sow a crop, be it corn, or wheat, or cotton, you will reap what you have sown. The same is true for life, when we sow to our flesh by our immorality, be it stealing, sexual immorality, or just ignoring God, or even Idolatry. Idolatry of course is placing things between us and our God, such as worship of other gods, such as money, fame, fortune, or even actual gods of other people. There is a complete pantheon of gods out there and many people who worship them. I had a friend who was a Baptist, who changed and is now following Islam as an Imam. I pray for him for I believe that he is destined for the nether regions or as scripture says, to the outer regions where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.
It is important for us to remember that our scriptures from the very beginning tell us that the earth, which God has created, will not allow for reaping other than what is sown. Gen 1:11 tells us that the ground will grow grass, and that, whatever kind of seed comes from the plants, such as herbs and fruit will grow more of the same kind. Now Paul tells the Galatians, that they should not allow themselves to be deceived, for God will not be mocked. Is it really possible for those who have claimed Jesus as Lord, to be deceived?
We have the truth, God knows what kind of seed we are sowing, we cannot hide our sins from God. In the Old Testament again we find these words from the Prophet Hosea: Hos 8:7 ESV For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it shall yield no flour; if it were to yield, strangers would devour it.
We who think we can do as we wish, because we believe that we have been given freedom to do so, are only trying to deceive ourselves and God. God will not be mocked. Listen to what lessons we can find in this passage in Galatians. One thing about farmers, they sow with a harvest in mind. I know that as a gardener my wife and I plant seeds knowing that we will harvest tomatoes, peppers, and squash, as well as other plants we have sown in the ground. We also plan on having a good harvest from these seeds, usually we do, but sometimes problems arise and we don’t do as well as we thought we would.
I am sure that farmers are not out there having fun, just as we have to prepare the ground for planting, so too does the farmer. If we are looking forward to a good harvest, then we have to work at our planting. So too the farmer has to work long hours to get the field prepared for the seed that he will sow. Of course in the lives of many in our country today, they do enjoy themselves, forgetting that they are ignoring the moral imperatives of our nation.
John Adams one of the Founders of our Nation said this about the Constitution: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. John Adams Ltr 11 Oct 1798 to the Officers of the First Brigade of the Third Division of the Militia of Massachusetts.”
We also need to take heed to the reading in Luke for today. Jesus sent out the 70 disciples to prepare the way as he was going to Jerusalem. He told them that the harvest was ready but the workers were few, and they were to pray for workers to come forth to go into the harvest. Of course we also look at Paul, he was a respected man in the Jewish faith, yet he became a follower of Jesus, which led to beatings, prison time and finally death. Paul writes to the churches and tells them that they need to work on the harvest, to sow good seed so that many will come to Jesus. The people of the churches were also persecuted, but many remained faithful and the harvest was plentiful. Today there are many such as the Coptic Christians in Egypt, even though they are being killed for their faith, they remain true to Christ. That is sowing seed to reap a harvest of souls for Christ.
We must also remember that what we do, what we plant is what we will harvest. If we are good church going folks, who are willing to live for the gospel every day of the week, then we are going to see people coming to Christ, because they want what we have. However if we are good church going folks, who are acting against the gospel during the rest of the week, then we are sowing seeds of discontent and even hatred. This will bring a harvest that we may not like very much. If what you do is to plant anger and discontent then you will reap anger and discontent, your life will be one of hurt instead of one of joy. Remember that God is not mocked, He will allow you to live your life in the manner you have decided to live it, but, when the stuff hits the fan, that too will happen and God will not interfere there either. Your choice, is your choice and it can be joyful or painful, depending on what you choose.
So we must be aware that our decisions in this life, affect where we will spend eternity. There is an eternity in the presence of the glory of God, or eternity in Hell. It is our choice what kind of eternal life we will have. Don’t think that just because you claim to be a Christian which of course means a Christ follower, and yet live your life as one who lives not for Christ but for yourself, you will reap eternity outside of the glory of God.
Let us also understand, that whatever it is you sow, you will reap a harvest of more than what you planted. Again we go to the farmer, as he sows his seed, say 10 bushels of wheat, he expects to harvest 20 or 30 bushels when it comes time for the harvest. If you sow the gospel, the good news of salvation, you should expect that there will be a harvest of many more people (souls), than those who heard and claimed the name. Those who did so, would in turn also sow seeds of the gospel and that will add to the harvest of souls to be saved. Of course the reverse is true as well, if you sow discontent and hatred, well that will be the crop that comes from your sown seed, 10, 20, or even perhaps 100 fold. What a legacy that would be, it will give you company as you live for eternity in hell. One of the truths of sin, is that we receive the fruits of it, even though we did not sow that particular seed. I have been to far too many funerals, and yet that is one of legacies we have received from Adam, his sin brought death into reality in our world. Each of us must face that reality too.
I find myself dealing with arthritis, gout, and diabetes as well as heart problems. These too are part of that original sin. Instead of having eternal bodies, we have bodies wracked with pain and suffering, because that too is a legacy of sin. Paul has written about that thorn in his side, and how his weakness helped to show Gods strength. Sin has brought imperfection into the world that God created. Again, going back to the beginning, God looked at all he had created and declared it good. Gen 1:31 ESV “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.”
God had created all that was good and mankind, in the quest to be god, had destroyed the good, bringing sin and destruction into the world. We reap that sin and destruction today, for the world is still steeped in sin and destruction.
Now one thing that is very important for all mankind today, and that is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. You see, he died to pay the penalty for our sin, and raised from death, to seal the truth that eternal life can belong to all who honestly claim the name of Christian. Honestly claiming that name is to act as the 70 who Jesus sent out and who returned praising God. Luk 10:17-20 ESV The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” (18) And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. (19) Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. (20) Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Remember, as you go about speaking and living the gospel, rejoice not that you have power by the Holy Spirit, but rather, rejoice that your name is written in the book of life. If you are not today proud of the life you live, you can change that, realize that Jesus died for you, and accept both that death for your sins, and the resurrection that guarantees eternal life in the presence of the glory of God. Amen.
This past weekend I read of Barney Frank a member of the House of Representatives marrying the man he has been sleeping with for many years. Now this activity is legal in the state of Massachusetts. But I fear for our nation, when our president decides that he will come out in favor of sexual immorality. That’s right, I said it and I believe it. Sexual immorality is a sin, God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of sexual immorality, he has sent many notices about this in His word.
Now, I don’t want you to think that this is a worse sin than any other sin. If you steal, murder, or whatever else you might decide is OK for you to do, the penalty is still the same. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death.” Sin begets, gives birth to your eternal death divorced from the presence of God. Sin – some people don’t believe there is any such thing, but for those of us who have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, we know that God frowns upon our sinfulness, and has made it abundantly clear from the beginning of the world, that sin brings us into a state of enmity with God and leads to death and the lake of fire.
I read about Mr. Frank and his “lover” getting married, which led me to reflect upon the history of the world in which we live. One of the things that caused nations to fall apart, to disintegrate, was sexual immorality. Homosexuality, bestiality and other crimes against God caused these nations to become hardened to any kind of sin whatsoever. Women would have a child and decide to leave it on a hill side to be eaten by wild animals, men would misuse boys, even their own children in sexual ways. When they got to the point of wanting only their own pleasure and nothing else mattered then the governments would begin to fall apart, they would no longer be interested in maintaining an army to protect their land, but only to protect themselves. They became so decadent that they allowed their military might to become stagnant, and finally the visigoths and other peoples who the Romans felt were nothing began to sack Rome. The same thing had happened to the Greeks and to others in history.
So, what is going to come of all this in our own nation? We are already beginning to see what will happen, the military is being cut, by politicians who want the money for “social programs” instead of protecting our borders, or fighting our enemies. This nation once was a place where God was seen and recognized, where immorality of any kind was not acceptable. Now however, we find that even the courts are willing to allow pornographers to ply their trade openly. It used to be that magazines like Penthouse, Playboy and others were hidden behind a counter, now they are out in the open where our children can look at them. We teach our kids that immorality is OK that sin is fun, because we watch filth on our TV’s and listen to it on our radio’s.
One other thing I read about over the weekend was a woman who put beer in her son’s sippy cup. This was a very young child, still using a sippy cup. He excuse, he was grabbing for the beer pitcher, so she gave him some to make him happy. HELLO? The child is no longer in her custody, but what is going on in our society that a mother is that callous?
We are riding on a train to hell and unless we turn this thing around, our nation will be no more. It has already been changed, we no longer support marriage as between a man and a woman, it is now OK in many parts of the country for 2 men or two women to marry each other. What’s next, a man and his horse, or a woman and her dog? Maybe a threesome can also get married? Our nation, once cared about these things but it seems we no longer do, and that says to me that we are on our way to the Fundamental Change that President Obama promised in 2008. It frightens me to think that we are going to throw God out of our nation, for the nation that does not know God is a nation on its way to destruction.
BTW there is hope, it only we will wake up and listen to God’s word. The verse in Romans 6:23 says “The wages of sin is death, but, the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Wake up Church, Wake up America. There are two destinations in eternity, one is hell, the other Heaven. Will you decide for hell? Or will you stand up for Christ, for morality and for Heaven? Your choice.
